Key Experiences

Always wanted to work in Fashion, discovered Garment Technology at Uni
I studied a Fashion Management Degree that covered the many disciplines found in retail and supply. I had a strong interest in the Technology elements - patterns, garment constructions, costings etc. The great benefit of the course was the industry placement year where I worked as an Assistant Technologist at a Childrenswear Supplier.

This was a spring board to my career path as I had practical experience in the field. After my degree I worked at a small brand as a Technologist where I had the opportunity to travel and visit factories which bolstered my learning.
I had the opportunity to join M&S in 2008 as an Assistant Technologist - this was a particular career goal of mine. From there I built an understanding of the systems and processes and have since progressed through the levels and job roles to where I am now.

Current Position

I am the Garment Technologist on Men's Shirts & Ties
Currently I am the Garment Technologist on Men's Shirts & Ties. This covers a broad spectrum of products within those categories and a vaired supply base. I work closely with design, buying and merchandising to develop products and contribute in terms of fit, construction, quality and innovation etc. I liase with the sourcing offices and factories to help with this process.

Main Motivations

I really enjoy working as part of a great team, finding great product opportunites, improving the experience and quality for the customer.
At M&S there is the chance to work on lots of different product areas so you build your knowledge up and get to work with industry leading suppliers.

Top Advice

Take the opportunities, never stop learning and own your development
My advice would be to take the opportunities that present themselves, whether it's a new department, buying unit or role, take it - there is always something new to learn. If there is something you don't know - go out and find the answer, talk to people, read, go on courses - there are so many opportunities out there!

Greatest Achievement

Producing the most sustainable Formal Coat
My team and I worked to produce the most sustainable formal coat possible at the time. I worked hard to source / develop trims and components which meant everything that went into the product had sustainable credentials.
